Back in 1989, three dads from The Community Church took their boys away for a weekend. Every year this same group carried on going camping for one weekend in the summer. This group has steadily grown and now about 30 dads/guardians go together with their lads as well as their lasses! The weekend is an opportunity for dad/guardians to spend quality time with their children in a stress-free, relaxed and enjoyable environment. As part of the bigger picture which is Dads Lads n Lasses, it continues to encourage men in their important roles as fathers and provides opportunities for friendship with other men.
“I have a great time at Dads Lads n Lasses. My favourite time is when we all cook and eat together as one big happy family.”
The weekend programme...
Arrive on the Friday afternoon, set up camp and grab some dinner! Some dads like to take some time off work on Friday and turn up early. Dads are always willing to lend a hand setting up tents. The evening often ends with songs around the campfire.
On Saturday a cooked breakfast is provided, followed by activities such as orienteering, games, crafts or hiking. We have a barbeque in the evening followed by a talent show. The talent show is a highlight of the weekend with children and dads performing short dramas, magic shows, playing instruments, telling jokes and singing songs to the assembled throng. We love to encourage this, so if you or your children want to prepare something or just improvise on the night, that would be great.
On Sunday another cooked breakfast (if you still feel like it!) is provided, followed by a small get-together. The rest of the day consists of lunch, games and time just to 'be' and 'do' whatever you want with your family. Just before we leave we all take part in a fun activity and then set off about 4pm.
“I love going to Dads Lads n Lasses. I get to spend time with my dad and all my friends which I've made there in the past.”
The cost for the 2017 weekend is £55 per family and it runs from 16th-18th June at Lodge Hill Centre, Watersfield, West Sussex RH20 1LZ. We try to keep the cost affordable for both small and large family groups by averaging out the costs per family, rather than per person.
